Your marginal and average rates
Your next dollar of taxable income is taxed at 29.65% (federal plus Ontario).
Your average rate is much lower: 17.69% of your total income goes to income tax. With CPP and EI included, 24.85% of your income is deducted.
On your next $1,000 of income, you would keep about $664 after tax and payroll contributions.
What if
- Put $5,000 more in an RRSP: your income tax drops by about $1,483, if you have the room.
- Earn $10,000 more: about $6,635 of it reaches your bank account.
Notes on your estimate
- Ontario Health Premium not included. Ontario charges up to $900 a year on taxable income above $20,000. The income-to-premium table is not yet in this tool, so Ontario totals run a little low.

A curiosity, not a reason to move: housing and other costs matter far more. Quebec rows include the abatement and Quebec payroll rates; the Ontario row leaves out the health premium.

How the math works
- Taxable income is all your income minus RRSP and FHSA contributions and union or professional dues.
- Tax is worked bracket by bracket. Each slice of income is taxed at its own federal and provincial rate, using the 2026 brackets for all 13 provinces and territories. Ontario's surtax shows as its own line.
- Credits: the basic personal amount only. Federal and provincial basic personal amounts are taken off at the lowest rate. Credits for CPP and EI contributions, the Canada employment amount, the age amount and the pension amount are not in this version, so the estimate runs a little high, often by several hundred dollars.
- The federal basic personal amount phases down between $181,440 and $258,482 of income. The tool uses a straight line between the two endpoints, which is not yet checked against CRA's worksheet.
- Payroll: CPP (or QPP in Quebec), CPP2, EI and QPIP use the 2026 rates and yearly maximums. Self-employed income pays both halves of CPP and no EI.
- Left out on purpose: the dividend gross-up and credit, the capital gains inclusion rate, the Ontario Health Premium, pension income splitting, and part-year or multi-province residence. Quebec taxable income can differ slightly from the federal figure used here.
- Paycheque mode assumes the same pay every period, no other income, and your TD1 claims. Your employer's payroll follows CRA's exact formulas.
