Not legal advice. This disclosure is a draft prepared by the LoonieLogic team from the Competition Bureau’s guidance on influencer marketing and the Competition Act. A Canadian lawyer must review it before publication.
The one-sentence version
Some links on this site are affiliate links: if you sign up for a product through them, the provider may pay us a commission, at no extra cost to you. We tell you exactly where this applies, and it never changes our math or our conclusions.
How LoonieLogic makes money
LoonieLogic is free to read, and we plan to keep it that way. We earn money through affiliate commissions: some links on this site point to financial products (brokerages, banks, tax software), and if you sign up through those links, the company may pay us a commission. It costs you nothing extra.
Why we disclose this
Under Canada’s Competition Act, anyone promoting a product while having a material connection to the seller (commissions, payments, free products, or any relationship that could affect how you judge our independence) must disclose that connection clearly, prominently, and inseparably from the content. A material connection affects how a reasonable person evaluates what we say, so you have the right to know about it.
It is also our editorial policy: we’d rather you trust us because we’re transparent than because we’re polished.
How you’ll see our disclosures
1. On every page with affiliate links, a notice near the top. Every comparison page carries a short disclosure bar above the fold, before the first affiliate link, along these lines:
We may earn a commission when you sign up for products through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. Commissions never change our math or our rankings, but they do pay for the site.
The notice is visible without clicking to expand anything, and it is part of the page itself, so it stays attached to the content. It is also written to meet the “financial interest” disclosure guidance in Canadian securities publishing rules (NI 31-103 s.8.25(3), applied by analogy) on pages where we compare brokerages or other financial services we earn from. Pages with no live affiliate relationships say so explicitly, instead of disclosing commissions they can’t earn.
2. On the links themselves. Every affiliate link goes through our own /go/ address, carries rel="sponsored", and is labelled “affiliate link” next to the button. No ambiguous language: we don’t hide behind “Partner”, “Ambassador”, or “Thanks to Company X”.
3. On social media. Any social post from LoonieLogic that contains an affiliate link is tagged #ad or #sponsored, visible without expanding the post, because the disclosure has to travel with the content wherever it’s shared.
4. On this page. This standing disclosure is linked from the footer of every page on the site.
What affiliate links do and don’t change
| They DO | They DON’T |
|---|---|
| Pay for the site’s hosting, research, and tools | Change any calculator formula or worked-example math |
| Let us keep everything free to read | Change which providers we compare or which figures we show |
| Come only from providers we’ve researched ourselves | Buy positive coverage, higher rankings, or deleted criticism |
Our verdicts are never for sale. We rank products by what’s best for the reader (fees, features, and fit), and the commission a product pays doesn’t move it up the list. If a product that pays us loses to one that doesn’t, the better product still wins, and we’ll say so in plain language.
Our comparison tables show the same providers and the same verified figures whether or not we have an affiliate relationship. Promotions and rates change often, so every comparison carries a verification date showing when we last checked the provider’s own site.
Genuine opinions only
Anything we say about a provider, praise or criticism, reflects documented research, consistent with the Competition Act and Ad Standards Canada’s rules on accuracy, disguised advertising, and testimonials (Clauses 1, 2, and 7 of the Canadian Code of Advertising Standards). We don’t publish opinions we don’t hold, and we don’t repeat a provider’s marketing claims without checking them.
Current status and the programs we work with
As of the last-reviewed date above, our affiliate applications are still pending and we participate in no live affiliate programs. The /go/ links on this site don’t go anywhere yet, and we earn nothing from them.
Once a program goes live, it will be listed here by name, so you can always see the full picture in one place, and we check each program’s own disclosure terms before we publish. If we add or remove a program, this page changes with it, because the disclosure has to match reality.
One more thing
Affiliate links are how we stay free and independent of paywalls. If you’d rather not use them, that’s completely fine: type the provider’s address into your browser yourself. You get the same product at the same price either way.
